Spring 1

Writing

This half term the children in Year Two will be completing a poetry unit. They will enjoy learning and performing a poem written by Tony Mitten to other classes during a Collective Worship. They will work together to put actions to the poem and they will learn to say it with wonderful expression. They will study a number of other poems and become poets themselves. At the end of the unit they will write their very own poem based on one of the poems they will have read during their writing lessons.

During the week the children also have a Grammar/Punctuation lesson, handwriting sessions and reading activities.

Maths

This half term the children will be learning multiplication and division, money and geometry. To further develop their fluency in number facts we will be teaching short, 15 minute, fluency lessons with use of a rekenrek. These lessons will aim to focus on number bonds, related facts and mental arithmatic.

We will also be learning more about 'maths toolkits' our way of understanding what mathematical knowledge we will be applying to problem solving challenges.

Reading

Reading is taught through Little Wandle reading sessions, which take place 3 times a week. For those children who have progressed and now are onto free-reader books (fiction and non-fiction books that are not fully decodable for fluent readers) practise their reading skills through Reading Adventure lessons which take place at the same time as Little Wandle

Phonics

The children will all start the next stage of phonics, bridge to spellings. Where they will learn spelling rules through exciting and engaging Spelling Investigation lessons. Here the learning is made fun and memorable to enable the learning to 'stick' as well giving the children lots of chance to practise and apply their learning in different contexts.

Science

In science, the children will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive. They learn how to identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats; and describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

Religious Education

'What can we learn from a Mosque?' is the title of this half term's unit. Through this unit the children will learn the difference between traditions and practices of Christianity and Islam.

PSHE

During this half term, the children will develop their understanding of safety: roads, medicines and an introduction to online safety; distinguishing secrets from surprises; naming body parts and looking at the concept of privacy.

Computing

Geography

Year Two will deep dive into Australia this half term. We will explore the different physical and human features Australia has compared to the UK. Do you know what animals you might find in Australia?

Art

The children will discover the vast amount of art created using the inspiration from flowers. We will explore the colours used in different pieces to create a desired effect and display emotions from an artist. We will create our own flower art using water colours and pastels.

PE

Year Two will continue to have two PE lessons a week, one lesson of dance and the other invasion games.
