Samba and Carnival Sounds

Samba and Carnival Sounds and Instruments

(South America)

The children have enjoyed an introduction to samba and the sights and sounds of the carnival celebrations, such as Carnival in Brazil.

The children took part in a listening quiz to try to identify some of the many instruments commonly used within samba music. Mrs Joint was extremely impressed that over two weeks, the children remembered so many, particularly distinguishing between the sounds made by four different drums.

Trying out a variety of instruments was great fun. However, we had to play the rather loud cow bells very gently indeed!

Together and in groups, the children tried to learn and layer up sounds, experimenting with the traditional sounds and instruments and syncopated rhythms, and composing their samba breaks.
