During this unit, Year Five have been learning all about traditional African songs.
The children begun by listening to an example of a traditional song (see below video). Children had a go at guessing where they thought it was from. Some children guessed South Africa and they were correct!
We have also been learning a 'call and response' song, called Shosholoza.
Shosholoza was originally sung by men of the Bantu people who lived in Zimbabwe and used to travel between their homes and neighbouring South Africa by steam train to work in South Africa’s diamond and gold mines. The song uses the Ndebele langugage. The song was sung in time with the rhythm of the men swinging their axes to dig, and was sung as a call and response sung to make the hard work feel easier.
