We explored clapping along to the syllables of words including our own names and learnt phrases before creating rhythmic patterns to retell a familiar fairy tale. This playful activity introduced us to the concept of rhythm, a key building block of music. We also explored changing our voices to convey a range of emotions. By experimenting with high and low pitches, loud and soft volumes, we discovered how our voices have unique qualities, just like a fingerprint for sound – this is what we call timbre! Through fairy tales, we further explored this concept; learning that different characters have distinct voices i.e. The Big Bad Wolf. This helped us to understand how timbre can be used to identify a speaker and express emotions in a story.
