Phoebe Cummings - March 2023
What a privilege it was for our children to be able to take part in a workshop with such an accomplished sculptor. Phoebe Cummings is one of our parents who is very quiet about the extent of her success as an artist. We hope that we do not embarrass her by listing some of her achievements...from undertaking a number of artist residencies in the UK, USA and Greenland, including six months as ceramics artist-in-residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, to being awarded prizes such as the Woman's Hour Craft Prize. She was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Brighton and is a research associate at the Ceramics Research Centre.
As part of the children's work on sculptors such as Chihuly, the children have also learnt about her work in clay. After demonstrations by Miss Cummings, the children were given the freedom to express themselves and their ideas in the same medium.
A huge thank you to Miss Cummings for giving up her time and donating resources so that the children could deepen their understanding of the impact of sculpture.
Year Three parents will have the chance to view more of the photos in their children's art sketch books.
