Becoming a Dementia Friendly School
As part of our journey to become a dementia friendly school, we will be educating our staff and pupils to understand how they can be dementia friendly as well as making links with the Dora Rose Nursing Home. We are thrilled to be a part of this nationwide community, as we are very aware of how much dementia can impact our families’ lives.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological disorders. There are over 200 subtypes of dementia but the most common are Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular dementia.
Regardless of which type of dementia is diagnosed and what part of the brain is affected, each person will experience dementia in their own unique way. Here's a video which explains this:
According to the Alzheimer's Society, 1 in 3 people born in the UK today will be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime, 1.4 million people are expected to be living with dementia by 2040 and dementia is the UK's biggest health and social care crisis.
The number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer. It is a common misconception that it only effects the older generation, as children as young as 5 years old can also be impacted.
