Supporting Spelling at Home
Below you will find information related to each of our eleven spelling books, with top tips, related handwriting and strategies to support your child with their spellings.
Thank you so much for taking the time to find out about our approaches to learning spellings at school and at home; working in partnership will allow your child to flourish as writers. Please do not hesitate to speak with your child's teacher for further guidance or information.
Revisiting Spellings
T
hrough experience and research, we know that repetition is the key to spellings being committed to the long-term memory. Sounding out the majority of words is our primary approach to learning spellings, but we recognise that knowing how to spell a word and then using it correctly in every day writing, requires repetition over time. At the start of the year, your child will receive one of these three books. The first is for Key Stage One, the second is for Year Three and Year Four and the third is for Year Five and Six. These books are individualised and contain only the words that your child has misspelt.
Spelling Books - Reception, Year One, Year Two, Year Three and Year Four
Once your child has polished any spellings from previous books, they will receive one of the books below. Click on your child's current spelling book to access top tips, handwriting linked to each set, practice sentences for every set and phonics resources. It is extremely important that your child does not learn spellings beyond their maturity and reading ability. We have found that when children learn these words too early, they do not use them and they are forgotten quickly. If your child requires further spellings, your child's teachers will provide sets as needed.
Spelling Frame - Year Five and Six
While working on polishing their individual spellings in their personalised books, children in Upper Key Stage Two will also be using an online platform, Spelling Frame, to further support their spelling learning. We are using Spelling Frame to help children strengthen and retain understanding of the spelling rules and patterns taught in class. By using Spelling Frame regularly, children can revisit key spelling patterns at their own pace, receive immediate feedback and track their progress over time. This consistent, tailored practice supports long-term retention and builds confidence in applying correct spellings across all areas of their writing. What if my child requires further support?
Although sounding out is our primary approach in learning spellings, there are some with specific learning difficulties who may take longer to break the phonemic code. In school, your child will receive tailored support and repetition as part of our usual school practice and their SEND provision. For those who are finding it difficult to retain tricky words or certain graphemes, each book link contains further strategies, such as the use of word cartoons. These may not help every child and your child's teacher and our SENDCo will be able to offer guidance for your child's needs.
Where can I find a variety of ways to rehearse spellings?
It is important for children all the way through school to ensure that practice is short and regular. Further fun and active tasks can be found on our website by clicking the star at the bottom of the page. Where activities are not written ones, these need to be followed by opportunities to write the words and use these within sentences.
