Using Phonics to Approach Spellings
This book contains phonics from Phase Two and Three. Please find below some useful resources. The mats will help you and your child to sound words out before spelling and to talk about spelling choices.
The files below show how to pronounce each phoneme and the early digraphs. To listen to these click here.
Phonemes are the sounds that letters make. Graphemes are the way that these are written down. Digraphs are two letters that make one sound (like 'oo'). Trigraphs are three letters that make one sound (like 'igh'). Fuller definitions are below. Please ask your child's teacher if you would like sound buttons added to help you to know when digraphs or trigraphs are being used (these have a longer line, like 'sound' - "s-ou-n-d").
