Practising in Sentences

Writing a single word is often easier than writing it within a sentence. Please feel free to make up sentences for your child's spelling sets. Use spellings from across sets already learnt. 

The sets below are very short sentences, most of which use each spelling in the set. They also try only to use phonic knowledge up to Phase Four. Please be aware that they are not meant to illustrate excellent sentences, but are  intended for efficient practise of each set within a sentence. Please acknowledge when they are a little daft.

Do improve by using words that your child already knows. Giving them repeated experience of being able to correctly tackle each word will help them to trust that they can keep drawing on the phonics already known when writing in sentences. 

Please ensure that your child is using a capital letter when needed (such as at the start of the sentence and with words like 'Mrs'). There is a useful formation guide at the bottom of the page. Your child is learning to use exclamation marks and question marks. Please do not expect them to use speech marks and commas correctly at this stage. 

Supporting Learners

It may be that your child has specific needs and writing these sentences will put unnecessary strain on their time practising. If this is the case, please reduce the load by saying the word, saying it within a sentence that would interest your child and then say the word again. Your child will keep hearing great quality, full sentences and then write the word. Encourage them to read the words back to you and to say them in sentences. 

Set 16 (moon, zoom, boot, come, some):

1. Come and see the moon as some stars zoom past.
2. Some rockets zoom to the moon and come back in a boot!
3. "Come and zoom!" said the man in the moon.

Set 17 (book, look, foot, do, love):

1. I love to look at the book and do a dance with my foot.
2. Do you love this book? Yes. Look at my foot as it taps!
3. Look at the book. I love it and do a stamp with my foot.

Set 18 (dark, park, card, there, here):

1. There is a card here in the dark for you.
2. "Here is the park and there is your card in the dark," said Mum.
3. The card was there in the park but I am here.

Set 19 (for, horn, sort, little, says):

1. "This little horn is for you," says Mum.
2. The little girl says the cars are for her and she can sort them.
3. She says she can sort a little card for him.

Set 20 (curl, turn, hurt, like, when):

1. When I turn and curl up, my arm can hurt like this.
2. I like it when you turn and curl your hair.
3. When did you hurt your leg? I do not like it!

Set 21 (cow, owl, down, what, one):

1. What is that? One cow and one owl are down there!
2. One owl flew down. What did the cow do next?
3. “What a big cow!” said the owl came down from the tree.

Set 22 (soil, boil, join, people, today):

1. People can join us today to boil water and dig the soil.
2. Today, people will join in and boil the pot with soil in it.
3. Will people join today? Yes they will dig in the soil.

Set 23 (hear, near, beard, oh, were):

1. Oh! Were you near? Yes, I can hear you and I see your beard.
2. They were near. Did you hear them say, "Oh, what a long beard!"?
3. What a long way! We were not near.

Set 24 (hair, pair, chair, their, your):

1. Their pair of hair clips are on your chair.
2. Their pair of dogs have long hair and sit on your chair.
3. Your hair looks good and their pair of cats are on the chair.

Set 25 (fast, past, last, Mr, Mrs):

1. Mr Brown ran fast past Mrs Smith and she was last to finish.
2. Mrs Green went past Mr Jones very fast and he came last.
3. Last week, Mr Black went fast and ran past Mrs White.

Set 26 (old, told, gold, cold, hold):

1. The cold old man told me to hold the tight gold ring.
2. "Hold this old gold and keep it from the cold," Gran told me.
3. She told the old king to hold the gold in the cold room.

Set 27 (after, plant, snack, bright, scrub):

1. After lunch, we can plant seeds, have a snack and scrub the bright pot.
2. The bright plant needs a scrub after I have my snack.
3. “After your snack, scrub the bright pot and plant the flowers," said Mum.

Set 28 (runs, pigs, bags, visit, present):

1. She runs to visit the pigs with bags and a present for them.
2. The little pig runs to get a present out of the bags.
3. The visit to the pigs was a fun present to get.
