    What is a phrase?

    A phrase is a group of words. They are not full sentences and therefore don’t make sense on their own. They do not contain verbs.

    E.g the viscous dog

    the vast ocean

    over the hill

    There are many types of phrases:

                                           Be careful:

                              Adverbial phrases and prepositional phrases are                                          very often the same thing!

                              Prepositional phrases are either noun phrases                                              or adverbial phrases.

                              E.g He lost it in the castle.

                              Not all adverbial phrases are prepositional phrases                                      though!

                              E.g He ran extremely cautiously.
