Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, regrettably we are unable to invite parents into school for a tour of Berkswich CE primary and nursery. We understand that choosing the right setting for your child is one of the most important decisions that you will make in your child’s learning journey. With this in mind, we hope to provide you with a range of opportunities to allow you to gain an insight into life as part of our special Berkswich community and the chance to ask questions. We certainly welcome the opportunity to support and reassure you as you organise your child’s first steps into Nursery and Reception. We are offering virtual meetings to provide an opportunity for new parents to meet our headteacher, EYFS leader and teaching staff. This will provide a great opportunity for you to ask questions and find out about our community and learning at Berkswich CE. Your child is a vital part of this process, and so we welcome them to join in with the meeting.

Our Maths Curriculum Intention

Our maths curriculum has been devised in accordance with our whole school vision and curriculum intent, which aims to enable all children to flourish and excel – to become the very best versions of themselves that they can be.

Our maths curriculum is grounded in the belief that maths is a vital means by which children are introduced to concepts, skills and thinking strategies essential in everyday life. Our curriculum intent is for every child to tackle the subject with delight and enjoyment; it recognises the need to provoke questions and discussions and to stimulate curiosity. Where more formal methods are included, these are rooted in the understanding of the underlying concepts.

Berkswich CE maths curriculum is ambitious for every child including SEND and other vulnerable groups. Greater depth opportunities are available for all pupils in recognition that we believe everyone can be a successful mathematician. We acknowledge the importance of challenge as an integral part of lessons.

Our systematic and progressive curriculum is designed so that children work towards achieving mastery of the concepts covered within a culture whereby mistakes are expected, efficiency and accuracy is challenged and creativity and flexibility is valued. Our curriculum supports children in being bold mathematicians, tackling tasks with tenacity and resilience. It recognises that maths is a highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. Our curriculum recognises the need for children to understand that maths is critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment; it contributes to our economy, society and culture.

An effective maths curriculum supports learning across all subjects, making a crucial contribution to each child’s development as a successful learner. Our curriculum supports children in applying their understanding to make new discoveries and rich connections, guided by the expertise of the teacher.
