Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, regrettably we are unable to invite parents into school for a tour of Berkswich CE primary and nursery. We understand that choosing the right setting for your child is one of the most important decisions that you will make in your child’s learning journey. With this in mind, we hope to provide you with a range of opportunities to allow you to gain an insight into life as part of our special Berkswich community and the chance to ask questions. We certainly welcome the opportunity to support and reassure you as you organise your child’s first steps into Nursery and Reception. We are offering virtual meetings to provide an opportunity for new parents to meet our headteacher, EYFS leader and teaching staff. This will provide a great opportunity for you to ask questions and find out about our community and learning at Berkswich CE. Your child is a vital part of this process, and so we welcome them to join in with the meeting.

Mathematics at Berkswich

Fostering a love of Maths

Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

At Berkswich, we are passionate about Maths. Our lessons consist of fun challenges, stimulating games and though-provoking activities, all of which are set up to encourage the children to make discoveries and build up a resilient approach to the subject. Overall, we aim to provide the pupils with a mathematics curriculum and high quality teaching to ensure that our learners are numerate, creative, independent, inquisitive, enquiring and confident. We also aim to provide a stimulating environment and lively resources so that pupils can develop their mathematical skills to the full.

Mathematics is important in everyday life; indeed, it is integral to all aspects of life. As a result, at Berkswich, we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics which will remain with them throughout their lives. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils achieve mastery in the key concepts of mathematics, appropriate for their age group, in order for them to make genuine progress and avoid gaps in their understanding, ones which could become barriers to learning as they move through each year group.

Many parents will find that the way maths is taught is different from their own experiences. If there are aspects of maths you would like to know more about, please see our calculation policy, talk to your child’s teacher or take part in one of our family learning sessions. There are also resources on our main site in 'Supporting Learning.'
